Musei della Cartiera Papale
Museum | Ascoli Piceno | Marche | Italy
The museums of the Papal Paper Mill in Ascoli Piceno, Italy, are a significant cultural complex dedicated to the history of paper production and natural history. The complex is located in a historic building that was originally used as a mill and paper factory in the Middle Ages. In 1512, Pope Julius II had the building expanded and redesigned to promote paper production. Today, it houses several museums and exhibitions that shed light on various aspects of the region's history and culture.
Museo della Carta:
This museum is dedicated to the history and techniques of paper production. It showcases reconstructed machines and devices used in the past for paper production, including vats for fermenting rags and water-powered hammers. An interactive tour with images, videos, and sounds allows visitors to trace the path of water within the structure. Periodically, workshops are offered where traditional papermaking can be learned.
Museo di Storia Naturale "Antonio Orsini":
This museum houses the extensive natural history collection of Ascoli Piceno scientist Antonio Orsini. The collection includes numerous botanical and zoological exhibits presented in original 19th-century furniture. The museum was restored between 1989 and 1995 and is now a significant site for scientific education and research.
Gli Antichi Mulini:
In this area of the complex, the historical mill facilities used for processing grain and paper production are presented. Original and reconstructed stone mills are on display, and it is explained how the water power of the Castellano River was used for energy production.
Mostra "Tutta l'Acqua del Mondo":
This permanent exhibition is dedicated to the theme of water and consists of an interactive tour with touchscreens, videos, 3D maps, and plexiglass installations. It provides visitors with a comprehensive understanding of the importance and value of water in the world.
